Welcome to the Ipswich Town FC Supporters London Branch Website

RIP Sir Bobby Robson. 1933-2009

The photo below was taken at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon. By Sunday the floral tributes continued to be added, and there was still a queue to sign the condolence book in the Sir Alf Ramsey Suite.

Liz Edwards, London Branch member and Chair of the Ipswich Town Supporters Club has issued the following statement:

"All Town fans who were privileged to enjoy the success of Sir Bobby's teams at Portman Road owe him a huge gratitude. He gave our club recognition throughout the world, a sense of pride, and achievements far beyond our size or status in the game. All managers since Sir Bobby, and all managers in the future, will be judged by his success. He has been so much a part of all our lives, and the inevitablility of his death does little to reduce the pain that we feel. It is with an immense feeling of loss, of sorrow, that I realise that in the future I will be thinking "I wonder what Sir Bobby would have thought" rather than "I wonder what Sir Bobby will be thinking". The loss of Sir Bobby is really like the loss of a parent - life goes on, but you question a little bit of its purpose, and every success will feel a little lonely. Thank you, Sir Bobby."

At the home game v Real Valladolid on Friday (a really well worked 3-1 win, with Connor Wickam shining - one goal and one "assist" for an own goal that he might have claimed - and Pim opening the scoring with a super right-foot volley from a rebound off a half-cleared corner), there was an impeccable silence. Which started even as the players made their way to the centre circle. Amazing.

There will be a minute's applause before the opening home game v Leicester on 15th August, and the club are planning a special commemoration that day. Liz has had a number of suggestions for ways to commemorate Sir Bobby, and is picking them all up with SImon Clegg.

Please let us know if you have any particular ideas for remembering Sir Bobby and / or fundraising for his charity.

Let’s hope he has a similar effect in galvanising the players, attracting new players and keeping our best players at the club, so that we can justify on the pitch, all the hype that has followed us so far off it. We have the nucleus of a good squad and if the new additions can blend in and add the quality to those areas that have been lacking, we are certainly in with a shout of promotion, hopefully automatic, but most certainly a top six finish .

Cheers

Tim Edwards
